During 2008, the Capital Soccer Club Staff has become even bigger and stronger than ever before. Placing a priority on player and team development, the Capital SC coaches are teachers of the game who understand the importance of education, economical training, healthy competition, vision planning, communication, organization, and a willingness to strive and succeed. Throughout Vermont, Capital SC is known for possessing a unique value in which the players are challenged; yet supported in a dynamic and creative atmosphere.

2007-2008 Capital SC Staff Bio’s

George A. Cook.

Coach Cook is the President of Capital Soccer Inc. and Director and Co-Founder of Capital Soccer Club Inc. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in both Business and Education at Castleton State College, Coach Cook earned his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Vermont. During his time at Castleton, he was a four year varsity letter winner and Captained the squad in 1993. From 1994-2002, Cook was the Head Coach of Girls Soccer at Montpelier High School where he led the Solons to the Vermont State Finals twice and the Semi-Final’s four times. In 1996, he was voted the “Vermont Large School Coach of the Year”. While coaching at MHS, he served as the head coach for the Twin State Match vs New Hampshire and the team won the prestigious match in 1997. From 2003 to 2005 he was the Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach at The University of Vermont and also served as Interim Head Soccer during his tenure there. During his time on the sidelines in Burlington, the Catamounts enjoyed some of the most successful moments in the past 15 years.

Originally from Hartford (CT) Cook is an alumni of the Oakwood Soccer Club, one of Region 1’s most successful clubs. Cook holds the prestigious “A” license from the United States Soccer Federation and the “Premier” Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. These are the two highest levels of certification a soccer coach can receive in the United States. It is believed that less than 10 coaches in the entire state of Vermont possess both.

From 2004-2006, Coach Cook was the head coach of one of Capital SC’s most successful teams. No team, in the history of the club, has won more games and trophies than that team which produced many current collegiate players.

Peter Kim.

Coach Kim is arguably one of Vermont’s best soccer educators. Originally from Buffalo (NY), coach Kim played club ball with one of New York’s largest clubs, Amherst SC. He is a founder and Co-Director of both Capital Soccer Inc. and Capital Soccer Club Inc. Coach Kim played his collegiate soccer at the University of Vermont where he graduated in 1994. 5 years later, he returned to UVM and earned his Master’s Degree in Public Administration.

Peter is the Head Coach of the nationally ranked Middlebury College Women’s Soccer team and was the NESCAC Conference “Coach of The Year” in 2004. After landing at Middlebury in 2004, he was quickly promoted to Head Coach. Since his time at Midd, the Panthers have regularly been at the top echelon in the NCAA Division III. Since Coach Kim has been at Middlebury, his team has played in the NCAA tournament each year. During 2005 and 2006, the team advanced to the final 16 and final 8 respectively. In the past three years, no collegiate soccer team in Vermont has played longer into the year, than his.

Peter is a holder of the United States Soccer Federation “A” license and an Associate Staff Member of the NSCAA where he serves as Vermont’s Technical Director. A USSF Region 1 Staff Coach, who also holds the “Advanced National Diploma” from the NSCAA, Peter was voted as Vermont’s “Outstanding Contributor To Youth Soccer” in 2001.

In 2007, Coach Kim led the CSC U12 Girls to the Vermont State Cup, the Needham Memorial Day Tournament Championship, and the Green Mountain Challenge Championship. While competing at the Region 1 tournament in Portland, ME, his team went 1-1-1 in pool play, and missed advancing to the Semi-Finals by one point.

Eric Bagley.

One of Capital SC’s most valuable assets, Coach Bagley is the Assistant Director with the organization. He is one of very few Central Vermonters to have earned the “Advanced National Diploma” from the NSCAA. He also holds the “D” license from the United States Soccer Federation.

Eric is a staple at all Capital events and is involved in every aspect of the program. His leadership, intelligence, organization, and dedication have been a key factor in taking the club to the next level.

Coach Bagley currently serves as the head coach of girl’s soccer at Montpelier High School. Since he has taken over the program, the team remains an elite member in Vermont High School for Division II. Each year since his involvement in MHS, the team has competed for the Vermont State Championship.

Collectively, “Bags” is the person behind the scenes who makes everything happens and clearly is one of Vermont’s most knowledgeable coaches. A coach who challenges his players, Bags will coach the U13 boys and U18 boys respectively this season.

Steph Mead

Steph begins her 4th year with Capital as one of Vermont’s brightest coaching prospects. Currently, she serves as Assistant Coach with the women’s team, at the University of Vermont. Last year, Steph coached our U17 Girls to the VT State Cup, followed by an impressive performance at the Region I National Tournament in Maine. Originally from Victor, NY, Steph played her club ball with the Rochester Ravens.

As former captain at UVM, she earned a starting spot in the Vermont defensive unit as a freshman and never left the lineup. She played in all 72-career games, earning 69 starts. As a senior, Mead anchored a Catamount defense that posted a 1.35 goals against average as a team and allowed just 26 goals in 2004, the best mark since 1996. She was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team in 2004. Mead also earned a spot on the Brown and Gold All-Tournament Team in Laramie, Wyoming after helping the Catamounts win the tournament championship. It was the first regular season tournament title away from Burlington in the history of the women’s soccer program.

Steph graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social work and was presented with the Semans Trophy by the UVM Athletic Department as a senior. The prestigious honor is presented to the senior male and female student-athletes who have demonstrated a high level of athletic achievement and who earned the respect and regard of fellow students for leadership, loyalty, and service to the university.

The UVM Women’s Center and Women’s Studies Department named Mead the Student-Athlete of the Year in 2005. The honor is presented annually to a female student-athlete who has made significant achievements in her sport, academic and service to the campus community.

A talented student, Steph was a member of the America East Academic Honor Roll three straight years and also earned a spot on the UVM Athletic Council four times.

Jamie Koehnlein

One of Vermont’s best players is back again on the sidelines with the Red & Black. After growing up and learning her game in the Rochester (NY) area, “JK” played competitively with the Rochester Ravens Soccer Club. Collegiately, JK recently played at the University of Vermont, where she captained the team in 2005. While playing at Vermont, she won many accolades such as: The University of Wyoming Tournament “Most Valuable Player Award”, the America East All Conference Team, the America East All Academic Team, and the University of Vermont Athletic Honor Roll, the America East All Rookie Team, and the NIKE UVM Classic All Tournament Team. It is safe to say that JK is one of Vermont’s finest players.

Currently, JK is the Assistant Coach of the nationally ranked Middlebury College Women’s Team. Entering her second year at Midd, Coach Koehnlein is gaining a wealth of coaching experience and is involved in all aspects of the team including: training, scouting, player development, match preparation, and match analysis

JK is a regular member of the Capital Coaching staff and is a regular member of our camp staff, administrative team, and clinician. In the past, she has worked with many of our teams (male and female) and this year will be working with our U16 girls.

Jon Hammond

The goalkeeper is a special player who requires individualized and unique instruction. There may be no better instructor of goalkeepers in our area, than Coach Hammond. “Hammy” has been a long serving member of the Capital coaching staff and is tremendously popular with our players as he is able to balance professionalism and personality perfectly.

A graduate of Johnson State College, Coach Hammond was a regular in goal for the Badgers during his four year career there. Jon holds the NSCAA “National Diploma” and is the Head Coach of Girls Soccer at Harwood Union High School.

A tremendous communicator, Jon has been one of Capital’s largest assets since his involvement in 1999.

Tim Duvernoy

Coach Duvernoy enters his third year with Capital as a coach. This year, he will be coaching our U16 boys team, a group he has worked with for three years in a row. Originally from New York, “Duvey” attended the University of Vermont where he played for the Catamounts. Currently, Duvey is a standout performer for Capital Soccer Club Men’s Amateur team. While he has competed for Capital, the Men’s Team has won many trophies including: The VASL Founders Cup (3 times), Coupe Internationale de Laval, Quebec – Finalists, The Oakwood Soccer Club Thanksgiving Tournament (Finalist), and numerous indoor titles at The Soccer Center and the Central Vermont Memorial Civic Center. It is safe to say, Coach Duvernoy has enjoyed much success within the club.

Admired by his players for his demanding and effective training sessions, Duvey has quickly become one of Capital’s most recognized figures. Duvey possesses a very strong understanding of the game and his offensive style of coaching is electric to watch.

His dedication and loyalty to the club is second to none and is again looking forward to taking our U16 boys to the next level of club soccer.

Rob Moran

Coach Moran begins his second year with Capital and will again be working with our U10 Youth Academy. An alumni of Spaulding High School in Barre, Coach Moran has gone back to his alma mater where he currently serves as Head Coach of the boys team.

Rob’s enthusiasm and loyalty to soccer in Central Vermont is at the highest level. He has played a pivotal role in the continued developed in Barre as one of the key figures in the Barre Soccer Club. A lifelong learner of the game, Coach Moran is dedicated to the sport in all areas.

A respected player in our area, Coach Moran possesses the ability to “paint the picture” through demonstrations in which our youngsters can visualize.

Dan Roy

Coach Roy grew up in Barre when he played with the Barre Soccer Club and for Spaulding High School. Upon graduation, Dan attended the University of Vermont and earned a Degree in Accounting. For the past three years, he has been the Head JV Coach of Girls Soccer at Montpelier High School. During his tenure at MHS, the team has had some of its most successful years.

Dan is entering his 4th year as a coach with Capital, and brings a wealth of experience. One of Capital’s most organized coaches, Dan is one of the clubs best communicators, a trait that is extremely valuable at the youth level. Professionally, Dan holds the USSF “D” coaching license.

This year, Dan will be working with both the U12 girls and U12 boys.

Eric Bauer

Eric Bauer returns to Capital for the third consecutive season. During his time with Capital, he has enjoyed a large amount of success. Last season, he was the Assistant Coach of our U17 Girls team, which won the VT State Cup, and had a tremendous showing at the Region I National Tournament in Portland, ME

Eric is the Head JV Coach of Girls Soccer and Assistant Head Coach at Harwood Union High School. He holds the USSF “E” license and the NSCAA Professional Certificate. Eric attended the University of Connecticut where he majored in Biophysical Ecology. He also holds an Associates Degree from the Culinary Institute of America.

Victor Orlando Castro

Each club needs that energetic individual to fire up the enthusiasm in its players. Orlando “The OC” Castro is one of Capitals most knowledgeable coaches. Originally from Peru, The OC attended Champlain College in Burlington where he played collegiate soccer. His flair for “The Beautiful Game” is unquestionable.

Tactically and technically, Orlando possesses an understanding of the game that is second to none. A specialist in match analysis and problem solving, The OC brings a wealth of information to our club both as a coach, and a player with our Men’s Amateur Team. Coach Castro enters his 5 season with Capital and will assist with the U18 girls this year.

Jon Antonnuci

After growing up in New Yorks capital region, “Nooch” played his club ball with the Albany Alleycats. After high school, Nooch attended UVM where he was a critical player with their Men’s Team. After spending virtually every minute on the field during his first three years, he was named the teams Captain during his senior season.

As many of the Capital coaches are, Nooch is one of Vermont’s best players and it shows on a regular basis with his involvement of our Men's Amateur Team. This year, Nooch will serve as Assistant Coach with the U18 boys.

Currently a Social Studies teacher at Union-32 High School, he is also President of Batey Libertad which is a non-profit group that raises money for soccer players and organizations in third world countries. His groups has allowed for youth in these less fortunate countries to enjoy the game at many different levels and has provided opportunities for youngsters in their respective countries.

Misha Hudak

A graduate of Saint Johnsbury Academy, Misha Hudak returns to Capital SC after a successful career as a player with the club. Upon graduation from SJA, Misha played collegiately at Division II Saint Michael’s College. Currently, she is attending the University of Vermont in pursuit of her Master’s Degree.

An up and coming coach, Misha has years of experience working with Capital Soccer’s tremendously successful summer camps. This year, she will Assist with the U13 Girls.

Elvir Jandric

Originally from Bosnia, another one of Capital’s Amateur players will be working with our youth teams this year. Growing up, Elvir played his professional club ball for NK Troglav Livno and Iskra Bugojno while living in Bosnia.

As the Assistant Coach with our U16 boys, Elvir will bring his wealth of playing experience. A coach with tremendous playing experience will now bring his trait to the coaching ranks. A true educator of the game, and youth in Central Vermont, Elvir’s understanding of the game is a welcome addition to Capital SC.

Bill Laidlaw

Bill comes to C.S.C. with a wealth of experience in the strength and conditioning field. Over the past 15 years, he has been on the coaching staff of varying sports teams at the University of Vermont, St. Michael’s College, Middlebury College and Norwich University, where he boasts two national championship titles in Men’s Ice Hockey. Most recently he has worked with the Women’s Soccer Team at Middlebury College, where the team has advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament twice in the past four years. His expertise in the area of athletic speed, power development, and injury prevention has earned him recognition as one of the most respected Strength and Conditioning specialists in the region. As a result, he is regularly invited to instruct high-level sports programs and present at various sports-related conferences throughout New England.

Bill is a native of Brockville Ontario, where in high school he was a varsity athlete in basketball, soccer and rowing. In 1990, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mercyhurst College, Erie, PA where he rowed on the Varsity Crew Team for four years and played on the Men’s Varsity Soccer Team for two years. Bill went on to compete with the Canadian National Lightweight Rowing Team before moving to Vermont.

A husband and father of two, Bill is currently completing his Master’s of Education Degree at Southern New Hampshire University and teaches special education at Williston Central School. Bill holds certifications as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.), through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is a USA Weightlifting Level 1 Coach.

Myles Chater

After coaching at area high schools for 12 years, Myles joins the Capital team, bringing his love for the game of lacrosse. Myles’ most recent coaching experience includes Head Coach for Montpelier’s Varsity boy’s team for seven years. Prior to that, he also coached at Randolph and Spaulding High schools

Myles grew up in central Vermont, playing as much lacrosse as possible including high school and men’s league teams. After graduating from St. Lawrence University, he has been able to “give back to the game,” a common theme in the lacrosse community.

His contribution extends beyond the coaching realm including organizing the Vermont State Lacrosse Coaches Spring Clinic, serving as a League representative for five years, and sitting on the US Lacrosse-Vermont Chapter Board of Directors for three years. Myles has also been selected to coach three Vermont All-Star Senior Teams as well as being honored as the Coach of the Year, and two-time recipient of the Lacrosse Man of the Year by the VLCA.

Myles holds a US Lacrosse Level I Coaching certification.

Fred Stapenhorst

Born and raised in Southern California, Fred played sports extensively in high school and went on to play baseball for UCLA. As an adult Fred has participated in competitive endurance sports for the past 20 years, including running, cycling, swimming and triathlon. To date Fred has competed in almost 200 endurance races including the Boston Marathon, Honu Half-Ironman Triathlon, Waikiki Roughwater Swim and California International Marathon. Fred has consistently ranked near the top of his age group in both local and regional races.

As a resident of Honolulu, Hawaii for 16 years Fred trained for several years with a master’s track club coached by the University of Hawaii cross-country coach. He also received training from nationally ranked runners, swimmers and triathletes who also resided in the Hawaiian Islands.

As a high school teacher in Hawaii Fred eventually coupled his teaching skills with his athletic background and began coaching adults and students, particularly in running and triathlon. Since moving to Vermont in 2006 Fred has been a staff member at Montpelier High School and has enjoyed coaching a master’s track group. He also provides coaching for personalized training programs.

Fred brings a high level of discipline, dedication and focus to both his personal training as well as his coaching of other athletes. Fred believes that “most people have far more potential than they realize, and that idea guides both my training and coaching.”
